Interview with Mrs. X on College Underground Radio

“Everywhere a stranger, everywhere at home.” No motto could better describe the cosmopolitan singer, songwriter, and producer Mrs. X. With familial roots stretching across the globe, she has ancestors from the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic, and Azerbaijan. However, that is the sum total of what we know of her private life. So on this beautiful autumn day, I caught up with Mrs. X to learn more about what’s behind the mask.

What Musical Genre Do You Feel Best Describes Your Music And How Would You Describe Your Sound?

My style is “Pop á la carte”… everyone can find something in my music to feel good with. Like in a gourmet menu where you can choose a dish. This style of pop definitely has one foot planted in current pop trends – danceable rhythms, melodic vocals in a combination with an energetic rap. At the same time I try to create a world full of fairytale, a new world between the everyday and magic… because I love fairy-tales and think that the world became too pragmatic. But sometimes it´s necessary just to dream. To create a vision.

How Did You Get Your Name? Is There A Story?

Oh yes. I was inspired by “The Circus Princess,” an operetta by Emmerich Kalman. It´s a story about the talented acrobat Mr. X, he hides his real name and becomes a king of an acrobatic. He is wearing his black mask during all of his performances to hide his identity, and he never reveals his name or personal history. With his origins safe from the public, he is free to pursue his art. My mask is not black, and I´m not a “circus princess”, but my mask and the name of Mrs. X allow me to compose, produce and sing my music free.

What Are or Have been Your Musical Influences?

I love jazz. Etta James is really huge for me. I also enjoy the lyrics and music by “Lady Antebellum”.

What Are You Working On Now? Any Future Collaborations We Can Look Forward To?

The next single, “He plays Rock-n-Roll”, will be released in December 2016. I´ll rock your Christmas! Next year I´ll release three albums, one EP and three singles… It´s a lot of work, but I´m happy.

What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry? What Is Your Plan Of Action?

To be honest, I just follow my dream. And my plan is to follow my dream in future… All the stories in my songs are taken from the real life so that I hope that my fans find the answers to their important questions about love, friendship, heartbreak and other important things in my songs.

What Is Your Favorite Track To Perform Live and Why?

My current song “80 Miles away”, because I love the energy of the song.

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?

It´s still a challenge, every day. But I love challenges:-))

What’s Your Typical Songwriting Process?

I really don´t have a typical songwriting process. The songs are coming and starting to stream through my thoughts, and they are always complete: all the music and all the lyrics. I just have to fix it, to write or to record them on my mobile phone. I´ve lost a lot of songs in the early time just because I had nothing with me to write.

How Has Social Media Influenced Your Career As An Artist?

The contact with fans is easier thanks to Social Media. I love to stay in touch with them and always happy about the energetic discussion.

What Are Some Tracks and Artists Currently On Your Playlist?

Maybe something from my different playlists:

  • Lady Antebellum, Bartender
  • Etta James, At last
  • Cesaria Evora, Sodade
  • Louise Carver, Easy
  • Mozart, Adagio from Piano Concerto No 23
  • Natasha Atlas. Amulet
  • Sting, The shape of my heart
  • and for now Clean bandit mit Sean Paul & Anne-Marie, Rockabye

What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?

This is the information from the space behind the mask:-)) But only for you, I can reveal that before I´ve started to create my “pop á la carte”, I was having a great jazz time. Jazz music is like freedom. No limits.

Any Advice For Young People (Men or Women) That Want To Succeed In The Music World?

Be patient, work hard, learn every day and stay constantly in touch with people who believes in you.

What Would You Change In The Music Industry If You Were A Top Music Executive?

May I give you an answer to this question in a couple of years? First I would like to discover how the music industry and music business will develop next time and which direction it will go.

How Do You Feel About Originality?

Absolutely great. Originality colors our life! What should our life be in a black-white world? Just boring.

Is There Anything Else We Should Know About You Or That You Would Like to Add?

Thank you so much for having me here and for the opportunity to answer your questions! And, of course, I hope you´ll enjoy my music!
